Haus of Cabaret

30 Mar, 2025

We enjoy a show and dinner in one of Brighton’s time honoured performance venues.

There’s something incredibly seductive about the allure of an old-school cabaret venue and Haus of Cabaret Brighton is the epitome of this. 1920s Art Deco style sets the tone, with tables covered in crisp white linen and shiny cutlery – all of which face the well trodden stage that flaunts a silky backdrop. Sassy waitresses take orders and transport laden trays of expertly shaken cocktails and wine, as we, the audience, sit in anticipation. Then the lights are dimmed and suddenly, it is showtime…

Dolly Rocket steers the ship with her immense talent, sharp humour and commanding stage presence. She is as acerbically funny as any top male drag performer I’ve seen, keeping a rowdy audience in line with her sternness that flips naturally to a joke about chodes all the while looking fabulous in sequins with doe eyes that would make the prettiest of cows jealous.

She owns the room, coaxing audience introductions and discovering why we are all there. It’s my mum’s birthday and a suitable fuss is made.

Dinner is an excellent time to visit, we were booked in for the 6.30 pm show and food is available. Three courses were presented with the smoothest of pea soups to start followed by chicken with dauphinoise potatoes, green veg with carrots and gravy, then it’s a crème brulee cheesecake, and a cheese board featuring English and French classics, grapes and delicate crackers.

Dolly introduced a plethora of energetic and talented performers starting with Dave the Bear who wowed with his striptease before transitioning into a singer. There was a skilled hoop performer and ballerina style burlesque both of which raised the temperature of the room. We clapped like seals while sipping on delicious wine and espresso martinis.

A cake with a sparkler candle was brought to the table with dramatic effect and Happy Birthday was sung. I cannot recommend this experience enough, either for a night out or special celebration. You will love it.
