Rare Thing

Brighton’s jewellery shop with a difference

Rare Thing opened in 2022 with a simple idea: create a space where beautiful, meaningful jewellery meets good people and good energy.

Tucked away in the heart of Brighton’s Lanes, Rare Thing is not your average jewellery shop. Founded by designer-maker Nattie, the store was born out of a spontaneous decision, but its ethos has always been clear: to create a warm, welcoming space where jewellery feels accessible to everyone.

“I found traditional jewellery shops quite intimidating,” Nattie explains. “I wanted to build a community space instead, somewhere open and inviting, especially to the LGBTQ+ community. We don’t just serve that community, but it’s a big part of what we do.”

Inside Rare Thing, every piece of jewellery is handcrafted by Nattie at a bench in the shop itself. The work is primarily jewellery-focused, but the space also showcases art from local creatives, further rooting it in Brighton’s vibrant independent scene.

One of Rare Thing’s standout offerings is bespoke engagement and wedding rings. “We discuss budget, metals, stones, everything,” says Nattie. “All my jewellery is made with 100% recycled gold or silver and all of the stones we use adhere to the Kimberley Process, which ensures every stone is conflict-free.” Designs are painted by hand, not generated by computer, giving each commission a one-of-a-kind quality.

Beyond the sparkle of engagement rings, Rare Thing has become known for its jewellery-making workshops. The most popular is the silver ring workshop, which runs every other Sunday, with options to make earrings and even wedding rings. Couples can craft each other’s wedding bands, a process Nattie describes as “a bit of a moment” when they realise the personal significance of the exchange.

Workshops attract everyone from seasoned craft lovers to first-timers looking for a unique experience. “Sometimes people come after trying pottery or glassblowing the month before,” says Nattie. “Others book as a gift for a partner. It’s always a really nice atmosphere.”

We highly recommend supporting this delightful small business, which is the perfect place to buy or make something unique for your engagement and wedding.
