Roti King: Malaysian street food in the heart of Brighton

POV: It’s a freezing cold winter’s day in Brighton and you need some spice in your life that won’t break the bank. Enter Roti King, serving up Malaysian street food that is just as comforting as it is delicious.

Since launching earlier this year, Roti King has been one of my go-to eateries for handmade roti dipped into bowls of delicious curry. The rotis are hand spun and you can watch the master at work through a glass window into the kitchen – a mesmerising spectacle. Once baked they are everything you’d want in a roti.

The venue situated on Ship Street bridges the gap between takeaway and high-end restaurant. With a contemporary, unpretentious interior and state-of-the-art open kitchen you feel immediately relaxed.

We started with the prawns balado, fried in a spicy aromatic sambal sauce. The shell-on prawns were fresh, plump, well-seasoned and delicious, offering a light contrast to the heavier mains. Overall, a solid starter that elevated the whole dining experience.

Next up, chicken roti canai and beef rendang (these are two of my favourite dishes – they never disappoint) accompanied with two of the aforementioned fluffy, buttery flatbreads.  The texture was spot on as always: soft, slightly crisp on the outside and perfect for scooping up the rich creamy sauce. That first bite really sets the tone: simple, comfort food that hits the spot every time.

Roti King Brighton is a must-try if you’re craving authentic Malaysian street food done properly. Between the handmade roti, bold curries, fresh prawns and chilled-out vibe, plus cocktails, authentic Malaysian tea and ice-cold soft drinks, it nails that balance between comfort and culinary adventure. Great value, great flavour, zero fuss!
