Detroit Club Brighton Review

Detroit Club Brighton

Do you like a substantial pizza base with imaginative toppings and chewy, cheesy edges? Then Detroit Club Brighton definitely needs to be on your radar. Our editor went along to indulge her deep-dish pizza fantasies.

Detroit Club has created a contemporary space: bright, welcoming and plant filled with floor-to-ceiling windows – the perfect spot for people watching on Brighton’s St James’ Street. Supporting local indie venues is paramount at Discover Brighton and we were impressed by the passion shown from owner David whose focaccia recipe was handed down from his grandmother. (All the feels for that nugget of information.)

Who knew pizza could take on so many guises? There are many varieties in the city, but this new deep-dish pizza joint on St James’ Street in Brighton will win your heart. The base is a mixture of Sicilian focaccia and American-style dough which is light and soft with chewy edges, featuring toppings such as ‘Burger me cheese’, ‘Philly steak cheese’ and the ‘Detroit vegan’.

Forget supermarket meal deals consisting of soggy sandwiches and crisps, I went decidedly more upmarket when visiting one weekday lunchtime. For just £8 you receive a lunchtime sized pizza (with selected toppings) a side of potato croquettes dusted liberally in grated Parmesan AND a homemade dip.

‘Burger me’ immediately caught my eye – the prospect of combining pizza and a beef burger made me super happy. The result was utterly delicious: fresh ground beef with pickles, burger sauce, cheese and fresh tomato sauce. The test of a decent pizza is the cheese pull and this certainly delivered on that score. My favourite aspect was the chewy edges and the creamy homemade ranch dressing was a dipper’s heaven, elevating the crunchy croquettes. Since visiting, I have ordered pizza on two further occasions and am happy to report I find myself thinking about those slices of heaven with alarming regularity.

There are other deals to be had. For example, two eat for £20 on Tuesdays between 17:00–19:00 – you can share a large pizza with two bottles of Budweiser; and on Wednesdays a regular pizza and a glass of wine is £16.
