HYSTERIA is an upcoming group exhibition exploring the historical and ongoing treatment of women’s mental and physical health, identity, neurodivergence, trauma, and medical misogyny.
The title HYSTERIA references the now-discredited diagnosis once used to medicalise women’s emotions, trauma, sexuality, neurological symptoms, and distress. By reclaiming the term, the exhibition seeks to challenge historical narratives while creating space for contemporary conversations around women’s health and lived experience.
Through sculpture, photography, painting, installation, textiles, moving image, sound, and mixed media, participating artists will respond to themes including medical misogyny, neurodivergence, psychiatric history, inherited trauma, institutional harm, memory, identity, and recovery.
