Deck the System Brighton
The Brighton DJs breaking down barriers for women behind the decks.
When Brighton DJs Charlene From Neighbours and Lisa Douglas met for a coffee to discuss their experiences in the music industry, they quickly realised a shared goal – creating a welcoming space where more women and FLINTA (female, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, trans and agender) people could step confidently into DJing.
The result is Deck the System, a free community initiative designed to remove the barriers that often stop aspiring DJs from getting started.
“We wanted to create something accessible, informal and completely non-intimidating,” explains Charlene. “A place where people can learn, ask questions, meet others and have a go without feeling like they already need loads of experience.”
The idea was inspired by the pair’s own journeys through the industry and the continued lack of representation behind the decks. Research still shows a significant gender imbalance within DJ culture, something both founders are passionate about changing.
Rather than charging for workshops, every session is completely free, thanks to partnerships with local venues and the support of Brighton’s music community. Alongside hands-on tuition, attendees hear from established female DJs who share their experiences, advice and career journeys. The first event welcomed local favourites Queenie and Wild Blood, with more guest speakers already lining up for future sessions.
Charlene, whose memorable DJ name came about after years of people mishearing her name, has become a familiar face across Brighton’s club scene. Now a resident DJ at Soho House and with Ibiza dates on the horizon, she’s keen to encourage others to follow a similar path.
For Lisa, DJing happened almost by accident after stepping in to save a festival set when another DJ failed to appear. That unexpected five-hour set sparked a passion that has since seen her launch Brighton’s Four to the Floor Collective, host radio shows and take underground dance music to festivals across the UK.
Together, they’re proving that DJing doesn’t have to feel exclusive. “Sometimes all someone needs is a supportive room and the confidence to try,” says Lisa.
With Brighton’s music community firmly behind them, Deck the System is helping a new generation discover that everyone deserves a place behind the decks.
