Step inside Tim Burton’s Universe this Halloween
There could hardly be a more fitting way to spend Halloween than stepping inside the wonderfully strange, dark and magical world of Tim Burton.
This October, Red Events & Distribution brings Tim Burton’s Universe by Mystery Ensemble to Brighton, transforming the atmospheric St George’s Church into a celebration of some of cinema’s most instantly recognisable music.
Taking place on Sat 31 Oct, the hour-long concert will transport audiences through Burton’s extraordinary cinematic universe, from the haunting beauty of Edward Scissorhands and mischievous mayhem of Beetlejuice to the gothic romance of Corpse Bride and fantastical worlds of Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Naturally, the music of composer Danny Elfman sits at the heart of the evening. Burton and Elfman have enjoyed one of cinema’s great creative partnerships, with Elfman’s ability to move between the whimsical, melancholic and deliciously macabre becoming almost inseparable from Burton’s distinctive visual style.
Performed by professional musicians from Mystery Ensemble in their own arrangements, the programme includes ‘The Batman Theme’, ‘Jack’s Lament’, ‘Ice Dance’, ‘Making Christmas’, ‘What’s This?’, ‘Beetlejuice’ and ‘Alice’s Theme’, alongside music connected to Wednesday, Sweeney Todd and Corpse Bride.
And the setting promises to make this experience much more than listening to familiar film scores. St George’s Church in Kemptown provides a suitably dramatic backdrop, allowing the architecture and live performance to become part of the experience. Expect an evening that shifts between intimate and epic, playful and sinister, much like any Burton film.
Mystery Ensemble has become known for taking music beyond the traditional concert hall, performing distinctive programmes in unusual and atmospheric spaces.
