Burlesque – One Garden Brighton 23/9

30 Jul, 2023

On the 23rd September the walled garden will come alive with 1940’s themed acrobatics, burlesque and cabaret, all with a tempting three course meal from One Kitchen and scrumptious cocktails from the outdoor bar. They will be serving delectable cocktails to sip while the show unfolds around you in a display of vintage glamour. Discover chats to organiser Romi to find out more.

What is it you love the most about burlesque?

The ethos for Lulu’s Black Market is Empowerment. Education. Equality, which is what I love most about burlesque. Historically burlesque was created to empower women, female led troupes took well known opera or Shakespeare plays and parodied them, often performing in male roles. They challenged gender and racial norms, social expectations, took the mick out of politicians, really pushing the boundaries of what constituted mainstream performance so were real pioneers. It’s only later in the 30s that burlesque became focused on strip tease, which for the time was quite taboo but empowering for women who were quite constrained in everyday life. In the 40s, the era that LBM is inspired by, burlesque performers were being arrested and imprisoned across the USA and UK, so I’m very much channeling the spirit of those women who despite huge challenges continued to stand up for their empowerment through the art of burlesque.

How long have you been a performer?

Does dancing on bars count?! I’ve been on stage since my teen years and there’s always been a burlesque element to the characters I’ve played, I’ve dabbled over the years but really I’ve committed to it since I started Black Market in 2021.

Who or what inspired you to get started?

I’ve had the dream of Black Market since the age of 18, but the burlesque has been living in me from really young. I love film and film culture, I was obsessed by classical screen starlets and just wanted to immerse myself in their worlds.

Tell us about your show at One Garden?

It will be a truly decadent evening and not one to miss out on. Everything kicks off at 6.30pm, tickets will include a Lady Garden cocktail, our twist on the classic French 75 made with Lemon Gino and topped with our very own Plumpton Sparkling Fizz, a delicious three course meal, the show and a DJ until carriages at 1am.
