Holly Johnson

1 Nov, 2023

16/11

It’s been forty years since Radio 1 DJ Mike Reid banned the debut single from Frankie Goes To Hollywood due to perceived sexual content and set off a chain of events that would catapult Relax to the top of the charts and make the band one of the most defining of the era. They went on to sell over two million copies in the UK alone and it ranks amongst the 10 biggest selling singles of all time. Following the release of their second album, Liverpool, in 1987 the band split acrimoniously, with Johnson suing their record company but going on to enjoy a successful solo career, including a number one album, Blast, in 1989. Tonight he will be performing a selection of his solo hits and the greatest hits of his former band after they reformed, for one night only, to open the Eurovision Song Contest earlier this year.
