Salvage Cafe

1 Nov, 2023

Salvage Café on the Hove end of Western Road has its tenth birthday this month so it was particularly suitable that I should celebrate with brunch at this delightful eatery.

There is also a new menu with scrummy new additions with Dahl Of The Day, Grilled Kim Cheese and Bombay Burrito just a few to catch my eye. This is a pescatarian establishment with vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options available.

Behind the ornate front door with its artful glass the interior is warm and welcoming; crammed with interesting objects and pieces of art (which are for sale) as well as the sturdy, wooden tables and chairs. As soon as you walk through the door you feel like you are ‘home’ with background music playing off vinyl. The surroundings really couldn’t be a better place to escape the hustle and bustle of Western Road.

The hospitality is flawless and today had the added bonus of a warm, gentle welcome from Coco the owner’s dog as this is a canine friendly café.

My guest and I perused the plentiful menu (charmingly mounted on an LP sleeve) over cappuccino and English Breakfast tea which arrived in a pretty pot accompanied a darling little cut glass milk jug and perfect china cup and saucer.

After considerable time musing I plumped for the Blue Cheese Shrooms which were out of this world; fragrant mushrooms with just the right amount of bite sat on yummy brown bread toast. The accompanying smashed avocado, which replaced the normal egg as I’m allergic, was chunky and perfect for my taste. The dish was dressed with pine nuts, alongside pesto that exploded in the mouth, spinach leaf and baby tomatoes.

My partner’s Avocado Toast with fried eggs sat upon exquisite bright pink beetroot hummus which he thought was presented tastefully, feeling filling and healthy at the same time.

Even though full I had to be polite and sample some of the owner Tazz’s cakes so chose the Lemon and Lime Curd cake which was a heavenly balance of sharp and sweet that melted in my mouth.

Downstairs there is an art gallery and games room under construction and from my sneaky peek it looks as though it’s a perfect chilly day escape.

I couldn’t recommend more emphatically that you make your way down to the far end of Western Road to sample the myriad delights of Salvage Café. You may find me there as I intend to become a regular customer.
