Sam Harman visits the Mash Tun in Brighton to try some sensational hotdogs from B-Town Brats.
There’s a new kid in town, B-Town Brats whose menu promises naughty brats and dirty dogs and I couldn’t wait to try them. The new franchise is situated at the Mash Tun, one of the city’s most popular late night bars, with a covered outdoor space that is ideal for people watching while guzzling a pint or three.
All of the dogs on the menu are city themed, and I was immediately drawn to The Berlin which is an XL bratwurst, currywurst sauce, crispy onions and ketchup. Growing up in Germany, I am certainly qualified to test the authenticity of bratwurst sausages and currywurst sauce. The wieners are imported straight from Deutschland and Chef Lewis makes the sauce in house, priding himself on using only the finest ingredients.
The hotdog arrived in a cute little basket and was definitely XL as promised. In my experience sometimes the skin on Bratwurst can be a bit tough and takes a bit of chewing, this wasn’t the case here. After taking a bite I was immediately transported back to my childhood. The sausage was excellent quality, easy to bite into and definitely authentic. I enjoyed the sweet slightly spiced currywurst sauce and the crunch of the crispy onions. Overall I am happy to report a top job was done recreating one of my favourite childhood memories.
Next up, The Nuremberg which I was also really looking forward to trying as this dog features sauerkraut which I absolutely love. Once again the bratwurst was on point with the cool, vinegary sauerkraut complementing the sausage perfectly. I also enjoyed a side of loaded fries, known as Bratty Pommes – seasoned fries with cheese sauce, (also made in house) crispy onions, slices of bratwurst and currywurst sauce. This dish is a meal in itself or perfect to share. Speaking Of which, I feel I need to mention at this point the portions are enormous and I was happy that chef sat and ate with me! You can expect quality and quantity here, not something you would usually anticipate from fast food, this is high-end fast food if you will.
I recommend you go and try the food here, it’s crazy good and there’s nothing quite like sitting outside the Mash on a sunny afternoon. Food is served daily from midday until 8pm/9pm and there are some insane student and locals discounts. Over Pride weekend, in August (2nd – 4th) B-Town Brats are offering you a beer and a brat for just £15, the perfect way to line your stomach during the festivities. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available. As the saying goes, I’ll be back.
