The band were formed in The Bronx in 1980 by August Darnell, Andy Hernandez and Adriana Kaegi and included a heady mix of disco, Latin American and Caribbean styles influenced by the 1940s big band era. Darnell began producing other artists before adopting the name Kid Creole with Hernandez becoming Coati Mundi and serving as his onstage comic foil/musical director. Darnell’s then-wife Adriana led the female backing vocalists and came up with the name the Coconuts. Their breakthrough came in 1982 with the UK number 3 album Tropical Gangsters, which spawned three top 10 hits in Stool Pigeon, Annie, I’m Not Your Daddy and I’m a Wonderful Thing, Baby. The Coconuts and Coati Mundi both went on to release their own albums. The band now features Mama Coconut, Darnells current wife and member for over 20 years. They still continue to enthral and entertain audiences the world over.
