The Constant Service make-over

1 Oct, 2024

The Constant Service has developed, risen phoenix-like over the last year, with a new modern style thanks to hard work and a full heart by landlord Alex and his team Liam and Maria. From the age of 13 Alex worked in hospitality in a bakery, bars, events, hotels around getting his degree, which has set him up well for where he is now.

New events starting up are Karaoke – I’m definitely up for that. A twice monthly quiz night run by Alex, and an immersive cocktail experience with more to come alongside continuing live music nights as well as Sunday roasts. A brand new menu is in the offing. Quality pub classics with a modern flair and small plates, using local suppliers within 20-25 miles. He’s also very community minded and has signed up for the Southampton Street WhatsApp and is constantly helping locals with issues.

On the launch day for the Constant roasts my partner and I were received with Alex’s trademark warm welcome armed with two glasses of very special tasting prosecco. There’s a mighty menu with meat, veggie and vegan options. We chose chicken for my lunch guest and a mushroom wellington for me. My lunch partner that it was the best Hanover roast he’d had ever – we’ve had more than a few down the years – and I can’t disagree with him. The vegetables, including heritage carrots (who knew that carrots were purple in Tudor times) were cooked to perfection, as was the chicken on my partner’s plate. My mushroom wellington was a dream of individual flavours with each element shining through in its own right.

If the ample quantities defeat you then you can order a smaller serving. There’s also a kid’s portion available. This underlines the consideration and care to all customers that permeates through all they do. Desserts will change regularly but we tried the choux buns … perfectly light choux pastry hiding a not overly sweet cream topped with a shining chocolate sauce of just the right consistency to dribble down the sides of the bun.  I plumped for devine chocolate chip ice cream.

By the time we left The Constant Service was heaving with diners and every table was full. A well-deserved great success for Alex and his team. I recommend that you conquer the Hanover hills and sample the warm welcome with a drink and maybe a bite to eat.
