Maths tutoring and extra English lessons in Portslade.

Tell us about the history of Kumon? The Kumon Method of Learning was founded by Toru Kumon, a Japanese educator in 1954, after his son, Takeshi, struggled with math in school. Toru believed that educators should help children develop a mindset of self-learning, so he created math worksheets for his son to work on independently. In 1958, Toru opened the first Kumon Math Centre in Osaka, Japan. He published The Secrets of Kumon Math in 1974 and opened Kumon in New York. Kumon has now been in operation for 60 years!

Kumon offers Maths & English study programmes; Maths aims for students to develop confidence in the foundations of number patterns, multiplications through to calculus, with the ability to use the most effective and efficient method to solve each question. Kumon nurtures proficiency in reading and to encourage students to develop a love of reading. If a student completes the programme, they will have the ability to critique literature of all genres and complexities.

Do you find this method significantly helps children who may be struggling with mainstream teaching methods? Unlike schools who teach conventional lessons, Kumon observes, guides and encourages daily worksheet study to enable students to learn for themselves. Kumon Students have a personalised journey and given individualised worksheet to complete at their own pace, their ‘just right’ level of ability.

As they progress independently, they also strengthen their study attitude, work skills and understanding. This fill gaps in their learning and can advance beyond their school grade level. While two students may begin at the same level on the same day, their workload will vary as their pace and abilities differ. No child is compared to their peers.

What does a typical teaching session involve? When students arrive for their in-class session at Portslade Kumon, the centre is calm and instructors nurture students positively. The student will use their individualsied worksheets set for their ‘just right level’ for the subjects they are enrolled in. Kumon Instructors do not teach, they guide the student to use the worksheets to progress step-by-step, learning maths or reading incrementally, ensuring no concepts are skipped.

What ages are the classes appropriate for? We can support ANY child of ANY ability from age 3+.
