Vida Active / Fun Friendly Fitness

12 Jan, 2025

With the annual “New Year, New Me” mantra force-fed to us like a guilt-laden side dish after a month of indulgence, the prospect of walking into a crowded, testosterone-fueled gym can be overwhelming for many. Offering an alternate world in its sanctuary of solace, Vida Active, located in Hove, inspires a breath of fresh air from the tight corners of the average gym experience.

Founded in 2019 by Cleria Humphries, Vida Active was created with a burning passion to provide an inclusive, safe space for women of all backgrounds to partake in a variety of different classes free from the male gaze. Cleria’s vision has not only succeeded with this clientele, it has also fostered a social network for the older generation who attend. With senior members sticking around after class to natter over a cup of tea (or a glass of wine on a Friday), at Vida Active, ‘belonging’ is a given. Once-intimidating, self-imposed goals can be met under a blanket of newfound friendship and support.

I got to soak up the good energy when I was invited to the Thursday Zumba session, which takes place on the ground floor in a fully mirrored, professional dance studio. Appropriately referred to by Cleria as the ‘Tardis’, the back stairs of this expansive studio lead to a series of multi-purpose rooms – each well-equipped, bright, and airy. The strip lighting that plagues most gyms is replaced with windows that stream soul-warming sunlight (not that you need any more of a serotonin boost after attending Josie’s joyful Zumba class).

With the multitude of classes offered seven days a week including Latin Funky Fitness, Strength & Tone, Body Conditioning and Pilates, the space upstairs is meticulously kitted out with everything you could possibly need for a kickass workout. From kettlebells and bench presses to gym balls and punch bags – it’s a hub of fitness galore, and everyone of all fitness levels is accounted for.

Whether you are a known regular or a fresh-faced first-timer, I can say from experience you will be welcomed with open arms into a fun and judgment-free zone. Blinds can be drawn for privacy, and classes are all given under expert instruction with positive reinforcement throughout (and plenty of giggles too). In this space of solidarity, even if visiting alone, the sense of community radiates leaving you with a smile that will inevitably accompany you on your way home.
