Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra | Nigel Kennedy Stars in Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra’s Bold New Concert Season
Nigel Kennedy plays Jimi Hendrix, Purcell gets a jazz twist and Brighton Festival Chorus blows the roof off with John Adams’ Harmonium; big collaborations, fresh voices and unforgettable live moments in BPO’s electrifying new concert season.
Curated by pianist, conductor and Music Director Joanna MacGregor, the new programme brings symphonic greats, exclusive commissions, visual arts, choral works and world-class soloists to Brighton Dome, Kings Place London and across Sussex. It boasts an extended tour of BPO’s sell-out A Christmas Carol with Alistair McGowan, a new Listening Club series at Brighton Unitarian Church, and a new chamber ensemble, Brighton Spring, developed from the orchestra’s young players scheme.
The season kicks off with orchestral giants Rachmaninoff (September) and Stravinsky (October), performed by two stellar young concert pianists. In November, Dutch trumpeter Eric Vloeimans performs jazzy reworkings of Purcell and premieres a new work in Brighton’s stunning Corn Exchange. December’s Antarctica combines Vaughan Williams and Jonny Greenwood, with accompanying visuals by Kathy Hinde, and January sees the orchestra reunite with Brighton Festival Chorus and conductor Alice Farnham for John Adams’ choral tour-de-force Harmonium.

For Valentine’s Day, jazz singer and narrator Jacqui Dankworth brings to life the ‘Bad Girls and Heartbreakers’ – Lady Macbeth, Carmen and Shakespeare’s Juliet. In March, Joanna MacGregor conducts Birtwistle’s epic The Triumph of Time, Satie’s Gymnopédies and Stravinsky’s Firebird.
Finally, world-famous violinist Nigel Kennedy closes the season in April with Beethoven’s showstopping violin concerto and his own stylish Jimi Hendrix arrangements.
Bringing the music to life throughout will be the orchestra’s new Listening Club at Brighton Unitarian Church, a series of informal, illustrated talks from Joanna MacGregor delving into each concert.
