Derma: Skin health and beauty

We chat to Derma Brighton proprietor Alison about her passion for supporting the trans community and why you don’t need filler to tackle the signs of ageing.

For Alison, beauty has never been about chasing perfection, it has always been about restoring confidence. With 18 years’ experience and a loyal client base across Brighton, the skin specialist has earned a reputation for delivering results through advanced facials, microneedling and laser hair removal, while placing kindness and understanding at the heart of everything she does.

What truly sets her business apart, however, is her dedication to Brighton’s transgender community. Inspired by Alison’s son Leo, who came out as transgender at the age of 10, she understands first-hand the emotional impact of gender dysphoria. Watching Leo struggle through his teenage years before transitioning as an adult has given her a deep empathy for others facing similar challenges.

That understanding has become a cornerstone of the clinic. Alison works closely with transgender clients seeking laser hair removal, particularly transgender women, for whom facial hair can be a significant source of distress. Recognising the financial and emotional pressures many young people face, she offers free laser sessions to those with little family support or who are struggling financially.

Alison is also passionate about helping clients age well. Rather than relying on traditional dermal fillers, they champion regenerative procedures that work with the skin’s own repair processes. Treatments such as polynucleotides, skin boosters and microneedling stimulate collagen production and encourage natural regeneration, creating healthier, firmer skin over time. “I’d much rather improve the quality of someone’s skin than simply add volume,” says Alison. While fillers can have their place – particularly in the lips – she believes overuse in the face can create an unnatural, overfilled appearance.

Instead, she focuses on strengthening the skin’s structure, encouraging subtle lifting and helping clients look fresher and more radiant without dramatically altering their natural features. For Alison, the best aesthetic results come from healthy skin, not chasing trends. Her philosophy is simple: enhance what is already there, restore confidence and help every client feel comfortable in their own skin.
