Dynamo Gym

30 Jul, 2025

A friendly, multi award-winning, strength-training gym.

Nestled along a mews across from the Montefiore Hospital in Hove, a quietly revolutionary gym is rethinking everything we know about fitness. Founded by husband-and-wife team Ben and Cat, this welcoming space is built on something much deeper than aesthetics or before-and-after photos: community, confidence and real, long-term strength gains.

What sets this gym apart is hard to summarise – and that’s part of the charm. It’s not group PT, it’s not a class and it’s certainly not a commercial gym. Members train alongside up to five others at a time, following individualised strength programmes designed by these expert coaches. The environment is supportive, friendly, and judgement-free, with plenty of one-on-one guidance when you need it, but none of the pressure when you don’t.

Cat draws on more than a decade working with NHS mental health services and a disability charity, while Ben is both a seasoned coach and qualified physiotherapist. That background shines through in their empathetic, human-first approach. “We set this up for people who feel like they don’t fit in at regular gyms,”

Membership is £115 per month and you can train up to six days a week. Compare that to one-on-one personal training (typically £50–£60 an hour), and it’s clear this model offers serious value as well as results.

Dynamo’s ethos is no hard sell, the duo are super-confident about their offering and find clients love their relaxed approach and community vibes. There’s absolutely no focus on weight loss unless that’s something you want to talk about. Instead, the focus is on building strength and consistency. “This isn’t about quick fixes. This is about the rest of your life,” Cat says. “People often ask me about goals and motivation, especially in the fitness industry, that’s the language everyone uses, but I find that really frustrating.

“Motivation isn’t a reliable strategy. It comes and goes. If you’re relying on it alone, it’s so easy to fall off. What matters more is building habits, systems and routines that keep you grounded even when motivation disappears. That’s a huge part of what we do with our members, helping them create a structure they can return to again and again.”
