This is a first UK outing for the Sama International Film Festival which has taken place in Stockholm for the last 17 years\, celebrating freedom of expression and providing a platform for underrepresented filmmakers and those living in exile. Sama Brighton will provide a rare opportunity to see feature\, documentary and short films from Afghanistan\, Iran and Kazakhstan. \nThe festival is named after the Sufi spiritual practice of sama – deep listening and attentive presence as a path towards understanding. In the words of festival co-producer Sanjar Qiam: \n“We want Sama to be a space for Brightonians to encounter films and conversations that engage with political oppression through the lens of displacement\, identity and empathy.” \n“We are bringing unnoticed and quirky stories to people’s attention. Hopefully it will make it possible for all of us to discover perspectives and details we did not know we were looking for.” \nThe programme ranges from the remarkably committed filmmaking displayed in BAFTA award-winning documentary My Childhood\, My Country – 20 Years in Afghanistan\, showing at Dukes at Komedia\, to a selection of shorts at Pink Moon\, with other screenings at the Lewes Depot\, the Rose Hill and Fabrica. Running during Refugee Week\, 15th – 19th June\, the festival will include director Q&As\, music and discussion\, and highlight the work of local community organisations. \nFor ticketing and other information visit brighton.samaiff.com and follow @samabrighton

SUMMARY:Willy Tea Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Folklore Sessions Presents; Willy Tea Taylor\n+ Kenan Flannery\nJune 18th | The Folklore Rooms\n£15adv | 18+ \nWilly Tea Taylor is a father\, brother\, and son. His remarkable ability to write subjects in a simple yet profound way makes his songs a great place to lose yourself. Much of that comes from his upbringing surrounded by rolling hills and horses in a small town in California known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World”. \nWilly calls John Hartford\, Roscoe Holcomb\, Bob Dylan\, KISS\, Weird Al Yankovic and Willie Nelson his biggest influences\, but is always quick to advocate for his favorite contemporary songwriters which include Tom VandenAvond\, Nathan Moore\, and his Good Luck partner in crime\, Chris Doud. \n“The Essence of Folk Music in its rawest and most Authentic form”\nKenan Flannery is a 26-year-old award-winning folk songwriter from Dublin\, praised for his “bone-breakingly beautiful” music and a voice with the intensity of “a hundred Irish poets.” Blending his upbringing of Irish ballads with American folk influences\, he’s been compared to John Prine and Townes Van Zandt. He has performed at Electric Picnic\, The Ruby Sessions\, and The Secret Song\, supported acts like The Wolfe Tones\, The White Buffalo and Zachary Lucky\, and completed multiple European\, UK and Irish tours. Following the release of his acoustic EP Old Love Letters early this year and with a new album in the works\, Kenan has been touring extensively and has become known as one of the most unique voices in modern folk music.

SUMMARY:Stefan Mahendra
DESCRIPTION:Folklore Sessions Presents; Stefan Mahendra\n+ Support\nJune 18th | The Folklore Rooms\n£14adv | 18+ \nMahendra’s musical journey began at a piano bench in SouthLondon\, guided by his mother’s encouragement and early classical training. But it wasn’t long before he veered off the traditional path – drawn deeply into the world of jazz\, soul\, andR&B. \nHis early discovery of American gospel greats like Smokie Norful -artists who weren’t just masterful pianists but also powerful vocalists – inspired a deeper passion for both playing and singing. That influence led him to icons like Stevie Wonder\, Marvin Gaye\, Donny Hathaway\, and D’Angelo: legends who built their songs from the keys up\, crafting entire sonic worlds from the piano. It’s this lineage that flows through Stefan’s music – soulful\, grounded\, and effortlessly timeless. Stefan Mahendra has sold out every headline show he has put onto date. His live journey began with a sold-out debut at PizzaExpress Jazz Club\, Holborn in 2022\, followed by multiple sold-out performances at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in 2023. That same year\, he headlined The Lower Third in Soho to a sold-out crowd\, confirming his growing reputation as a powerful live artist. Since then\, Stefan’s profile has continued to rise internationally. \nIn 2024\, he opened for US soul sensation Jarrod Lawson on hisUK tour\, before supporting Death Row Records artist OctoberLondon on his sold-out UK run in 2025. Later that year\, he joine dlegendary soul group The Stylistics on their 24-date UK tour\, performing to audiences across the country. Most recently\, in February 2026\, Stefan supported Joss Stone on her US WestCoast tour – his biggest milestone to date. \nWith a highly anticipated second EP set for release in March 2026\,Stefan Mahendra continues to carve out his space as one of the most distinctive voices in modern R&B and Soul.
