SUMMARY:daresay
DESCRIPTION:Folklore Sessions Presents; daresay\n+ Nierra Creek + Llsn\nJune 12th | The Folklore Rooms\n£10adv | 18+ \ndaresay draws on a lineage of open\, literate indie songwriting with touchstones like Death Cab for Cutie\, Modest Mouse and The Dismemberment Plan alongside the lyrical directness of Frightened Rabbit. \nSmall town living and fractured identities haven’t really resolved with time. Having come through young adulthood\, those same tensions settle into a shared sense of melancholy\, forming the backbone of daresay’s debut\, self-titled EP. \nFeaturing their debut single ‘featherweight’\, which explores the disorientation of rebuilding a sense of self after losing the frameworks that once gave it shape. ‘featherweight’ reflects on identity as something formed\, undone and reassembled through influence\, doubt and distance. It sits with uncertainty rather than resolving it. \ndaresay have always been in each other’s lives\, collaborating on projects throughout their teens and early twenties. The trials and tribulations of band-life led to each member breaking out\, pushing themselves to the startline. Frontman George writes with a cathartic honesty\, collaborating with his bandmate and wife Aoibhin as he explores themes of fragility\, failure and the cyclical nature of life\, grounded by a sense of weight and restraint. \nA scrutiny of identity led George to search for a personal truth\, to put ideas out that answered a lifetime of questions. \ndaresay’s debut EP is out this summer through Hit The North Records

Sama Brighton will provide a rare opportunity to see feature\, documentary and short films from Afghanistan\, Iran and Kazakhstan. \nThe festival is named after the Sufi spiritual practice of sama – deep listening and attentive presence as a path towards understanding. In the words of festival co-producer Sanjar Qiam: \n“We want Sama to be a space for Brightonians to encounter films and conversations that engage with political oppression through the lens of displacement\, identity and empathy.” \n“We are bringing unnoticed and quirky stories to people’s attention. Hopefully it will make it possible for all of us to discover perspectives and details we did not know we were looking for.” \nThe programme ranges from the remarkably committed filmmaking displayed in BAFTA award-winning documentary My Childhood\, My Country – 20 Years in Afghanistan\, showing at Dukes at Komedia\, to a selection of shorts at Pink Moon\, with other screenings at the Lewes Depot\, the Rose Hill and Fabrica. Running during Refugee Week\, 15th – 19th June\, the festival will include director Q&As\, music and discussion\, and highlight the work of local community organisations. \nFor ticketing and other information visit brighton.samaiff.com and follow @samabrighton
