10-minutes with Halina Rice

28 Feb, 2025

Halina Rice returns to The Old Market (TOM) as part of ‘Reigning Women 2025’, with her immersive liveset and audio visual show. The producer is renowned for her vivid and eclectic style ranging from evocative and avant-garde soundscapes to beat-driven tracks. Working at the intersection of art, music and technology, her ‘New Worlds’ project blends emotive electronic music with impactful mixed reality visuals to create an other-worldly immersive experience

Tell us about the live show at TOM?

I did one of my first sell-out shows at The Old Market in 2022, so am really thrilled to be returning. I have upgraded the show and this time am using LED screens to show the visuals. The lights are programmed to go in time with the music, and you can expect a myriad of colours and formations. I work with international designers to create the visuals, using cutting edge visual techniques and everything is programmed to be pin sharp with the audio, which is all connected with my setup on stage, so I will be running the whole show. I have taken this show all over the world, MUTEK Festival in Montreal which is dedicated to the promotion of electronic music and the digital arts is one example of which I am extremely proud.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

I am an immersive first artist who aims to present an other-worldly experience to my audience. I want people to feel as though they have been taken outside of themselves for a short while when they see the show. How I feel when I attend one of these shows or art installations is like I have been taken to a different universe. A reflective period occurs, so whatever worries or concerns you may have had going on prior to the event, are rejigged in your mind once there. Essentially you return to the world feeling differently.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I produce all the audio and mixes myself and take inspiration from emotive electronic music. One of the first producers to inspire me was Jon Hopkins and amazingly I am on a bill with him in May playing Polygon Live LDN Festival in Crystal Palace Park. We will be performing entirely in spatial audio, and I am thrilled to be featured alongside one of my heroes. I also listen to a lot of sound and installation artists, some of whom are people who aren’t aiming for any commercial success, they are creating art ‘happenings’. My lead designer is Freny Antony and we are inspired by warping organic into inorganic sounds and visuals. So we might use images or sounds from nature but twist and transform this into something new – for instance sounds like gravel crunching or ice breaking makes great and distinctive percussive sounds.
