People affected by the infected blood scandal are being invited to a come along to an event in Brighton, where they can speak with staff from the Infected Blood Compensation Authority (IBCA) and find out more about compensation.
Between 1970 and the early 1990s, more than 30,000 NHS patients were infected with HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C through contaminated blood products or transfusions. This is now known as the infected blood scandal. Many of those people have since died, and thousands more live with significant health conditions caused by contaminated blood. Tens of thousands more people have been impacted as family members and carers.
All of whom may be eligible for compensation from IBCA. This event offers a chance to meet members of the IBCA team in a safe and supportive place and to ask questions about the compensation scheme, including who is eligible to claim, the documents that may be needed and how the scheme is being delivered. The Brighton event follows a series of successful events held across the UK earlier this year, which were attended by around 700 people. There are no presentations or fixed agendas.
They’re designed to be as comfortable and discreet as possible, giving people the space to ask questions in their own time. The British Red Cross will be attending to offer independent emotional support, and will be on hand if attendees feel overwhelmed or just need a quiet moment.
David Foley, IBCA Chief Executive, said : “These events are about meeting people where they are; and listening. People told us they valued speaking to us in person, so we’re bringing IBCA to more communities. “Events like this one in Brighton give us the chance to answer questions face-to-face and hear directly from the community about what support they need.”
You can book a time slot now at ibca.org.uk/events Further community events will be held across the UK between now and May 2027. Sign up to IBCA’s Community Updates at ibca.my.site.com to stay informed. Since being established, IBCA has paid compensation to 3,512 people totalling more than £2.2 billion.
