Japanese Head Spa Benefits

30 Jan, 2025

Most of us crave long, lustrous locks and many women opt for hair extensions to achieve this. Although extensions remain a popular beauty trend, they can be expensive, difficult to upkeep and sometimes cause damage to weak or fine hair.

2024 gave way to a ‘natural is best’ philosophy with many people ditching extensions in favour of enhancing their own locks. Rosemary oil is one of the natural ways to promote hair growth and sales have rocketed, especially on TikTok where #rosemaryoil has gone viral with billions of views. But what else can you do to maintain healthy hair and encourage natural growth?

Japanese head spas are another viral hair trend, offering a range of benefits that contribute to both physical and mental well-being, some of the key advantages being relaxation and stress relief, improved circulation, enhanced hair quality, and even relief from headaches.

The Japanese head spa, known as “shiritori,” has its roots in traditional Japanese wellness practices that date back centuries. This unique treatment combines elements of scalp massage, aromatherapy, and hair care to promote relaxation and rejuvenation. The concept of head spa emerged in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868), a time when public bathhouses and places of relaxation flourished. As the practice evolved, head spas began to incorporate techniques inspired by ancient massage therapies, focusing on the scalp and neck to relieve tension and improve circulation, which is proven to assist natural hair growth.

We chatted to Ayeesha, owner of ‘The Sussex Head Spa’ which incidentally is the only space offering these unique treatments in Brighton and Hove at the time of writing, although we predict a boom over the next few months.

Ayeesha explained, ‘Years of using shampoos containing heavy silicone and sulphates can cause your hair follicles to become blocked. If you add hard water into the mix then this can double the chances. If your follicles are blocked, the hair won’t grow as strong and will be prone to snapping and coming out at the root. Having a Japanese Head Spa can reverse this as it unblocks the follicles and allows hair to grow in a healthy and unrestricted way.’

The process lasts between one and two hours and a special tool known as a ‘Halo’ is utilised. This crescent shaped hose directs jets of water to your scalp, helping to clean the hair and stimulate the area. This is used in conjunction with essential oils and head massage techniques.

Keep an eye on our socials this month when we review this treatment.
