If you’ve ever wondered what happens when Kew Gardens, with its manicured lawns and botanical bliss, gets possessed by the spirit of Halloween, you’re about to find out…
Halloween at Kew returns from 17 October–2 November 2 and it’s exactly as gloriously spooky as it sounds. By day, Kew is all serene glasshouses and peaceful pathways; by night, it’s transformed into something far more chilling.
This isn’t your usual garden wander, it’s a 1.5km after-dark extravaganza through haunted woods, an abandoned fairground, Frankenstein’s lab (he’s still tinkering with that monster) and even a quick detour through the underworld. The trail isn’t a sprint, so expect to spend 1–1.5 hours wandering, shrieking and probably rethinking your stance on giant arachnids.
The organisers have cleverly thought of everything, including your preferred scare level. Choose from: Daylight – for families, the faint of heart and those who like to be tucked up by 8pm. Twilight – when the shadows lengthen and things start whispering back. Moonlight – the top tier of terror. Still technically “kid-friendly”… though your kids may never forgive you.
Along the way, expect ghostly delights: headless horsemen galloping in the mist, corpses with a little too much personality and giant spiders dangling in webs. Add to that dazzling light installations inspired by fungi, eerie soundscapes and laser-lit trees – it’s a kaleidoscope of frights and botanical wonders rolled into one. And because no Halloween is complete without snacks, you’ll find pop-up food stalls dishing up freaky fries, spiced drinks, toasted marshmallows and the sort of hot toddies that warm your bones (assuming they haven’t already been rattled by ghouls).
Tickets? They sell out faster than you can say “pumpkin spice”. Prices range from around £18 off-peak (if you’re a member) to about £22 at peak times. Our advice? Book early or risk spending Halloween crying into a soggy toffee apple at home.
In short, if you’re after a seasonal adventure that’s eerie, enchanting and just absurd enough to retell for months, Halloween at Kew is your nightmare… sorry, night.
