We visit Komedia for Friday night comedy featuring belly laughs, crisp white wine and small plates.
A hot-pink neon sign on the stage reads ‘Comedy Club’, throwing a seductive glow over the space – a prequel to incoming comedic shade. The low buzz from a burgeoning crowd crackles with anticipation as people slide into booths and seats, many avoiding the front row like the plague (us included).Â
We order crisp glasses of reasonably priced white wine, along with nachos, crispy squid and tater tots. An auspicious start. Our compere for the evening, Thanyia Moore, bursts on to the stage with lightning wit and boundless energy, and I wonder how any comedian will outdo her tonight.Â
The highlight for me, aside from Thanyia, was Colin Hoult, who had me belly-laughing as he regaled us with tales of living with a neurodivergent brain. It’s apparent some of the set is improvised – thanks to his spontaneous audience engagement – with ensuing hilarity. There are plenty of breaks in between sets, prompting ample bar visits. Throughout July there will be kitchen takeovers from the likes of Foodilic (4 July) and Nostos (11 & 18 July) with a secret pop-up that you won’t want to miss (25 July). Definitely go, it’s a gas.
