Lumi Health Clinic

At the heart of Lumi Health Clinic in Brighton are two women passionate about changing how we approach wellbeing in midlife. Clinical lead Beth brings more than two decades of experience working across hospital and primary care settings, with a particular focus on cardiology and preventative medicine.

Working alongside her is Nicole Gasson, Lumi’s community business partnership manager, whose role focuses on building meaningful connections across Brighton and Hove’s health and business communities. She believes healthcare shouldn’t sit in a bubble and works best when it’s part of the community it serves. Together, their combined expertise and community-first mindset are helping Lumi Health create a more proactive, preventative approach to healthcare.

What inspired the creation of Lumi Health and what gap in healthcare were you hoping to fill?

Lumi Health was born out of a very simple observation: many people don’t necessarily have something ‘wrong’ with them, but they still don’t feel quite like themselves. They might feel more tired than usual, notice subtle changes in their energy or mood, or have concerns because of a family history of certain conditions.

Often those people don’t know where to go. Typically, you visit your GP when there is a clear problem to diagnose or treat. But many people, particularly those in midlife, simply want to understand their health better or explore changes they’ve been noticing.

The idea behind Lumi Health was to create a space where people could have those conversations.

The clinic focuses on people aged 35 and over. Why is midlife such an important moment to reassess our health?

People in midlife are increasingly aware that their health is something they can actively influence. They might start thinking about family history or noticing subtle changes in their body and energy levels.

Lumi Health also brings together a community of clinical experts rather than relying on a traditional single-practitioner model. How did that idea develop?

That really comes from my own experience working in healthcare for more than 20 years. Patients rarely have just one issue. People’s health is complex and interconnected.

No single clinician can be an expert in everything, so we felt it was important to bring together specialists with expertise in different areas. That way we can ensure people receive the best advice and support for their specific needs.

What are the most common concerns people present with when they finally come through the door?

Broadly speaking, there are two groups. For many women, the symptoms are quite vague, they simply don’t feel right. They might struggle with sleep, feel more fatigued, or notice changes in their ability to concentrate or multitask. The other major area we see is cardiovascular health. Some people are very active and fit but want reassurance about things like cholesterol, blood pressure or family risk factors.

What misconceptions do people still have about midlife health and ageing?

A big one is the belief that feeling unwell is just part of getting older. In the past, people often accepted symptoms and thought, “Well, that’s just ageing.” But attitudes are changing. People don’t want to simply put up with feeling unwell any more and they shouldn’t have to.

Menopause is finally being talked about more openly. Are you seeing a shift in how women approach this stage of life?

Absolutely. More women now want to discuss their symptoms and understand the options available to them.

Many are surprised to learn how much treatment has evolved. HRT, for example, now comes in a variety of forms including sprays, gels and patches. Often women have tried something years ago that didn’t suit them and didn’t realise there are now alternatives.

Heart health is another key focus. What should people in their forties and fifties be paying attention to?

Heart disease is one of the areas where prevention can make a huge difference. It’s important to understand your key numbers, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and look at lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise.

When we see people early, we can often reduce their risk of cardiovascular problems later in life. Prevention really is the key.

Finally, what’s the most rewarding part of the work you do?

For me, it’s the moments when someone leaves feeling reassured or empowered. Sometimes it’s explaining a treatment option they didn’t realise existed. Other times it’s simply confirming that everything is fine and they can carry on as they are.
