Q&A with Jessie of Beau Events

31 Oct, 2025

We chatted to Jessie, curator of Beau Events, makers’ and artist markets based in central Brighton.

Tell us a little about your background, are you an artist yourself? I’ve been creating and making my signature bottle-top artworks for around 10 years now. But my background actually began in psychology, that’s what my degree is in and I worked in social care for about a decade before moving fully into the creative world. It was terrifying at first, but I knew I needed to do something that nurtured me as much as I’d been nurturing others.

That’s quite a shift from psychology to art! Was it difficult to take that leap? Very! But it felt necessary. Psychology and creativity have always been my two great loves. I went with my head at first, choosing psychology, but I had to follow my heart. That decision has given me a deeper understanding of people, which I now bring into my creative work and the events I run.

Tell us about your art, the bottle tops have become your trademark, haven’t they? They have! Every piece I make uses recycled bottle tops, either found on Brighton Beach or donated. I never stray from that medium because it’s part of my identity. People call me the bottle-top lady of Brighton!

How did Beau Events come about? After several years trading as an artist, I wanted to create events that reflected what I’d always wanted as an exhibitor, something affordable, accessible and community focused. At Beau Events, I make sure every artist feels cared for, supported and properly promoted.

What has the response been like? Incredible. Each event has between 40 and 50 artists, and I’ve now hosted hundreds over the last three years. Some have gone on to big commissions and exhibitions, thanks to connections made at my events. It’s about so much more than sales – it’s about visibility, networking and belonging.

You’ve got a busy festive season ahead. Yes! We’re holding Christmas markets at the Brighton Unitarian Church (15 Nov & 13 Dec) and Jubilee Square (22 & 29 Nov, 20 Dec). They’ll be full of handmade gifts, mulled wine and Brighton sparkle!

Finally, what does art mean to you? Art isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. It feeds us, connects us and brings joy. Supporting local artists means investing in something that truly lasts.
