Recently, I completed the Hyrox Singles event, which got me thinking about the power of movement, nourishment and mindset. Just four months ago, I was advised by my surgeon not to run again due to a degenerative knee condition with arthritis. This was diagnosed when he performed surgery—and, honestly, his recommendation left me feeling stuck. But, sometimes, you must listen to your body and trust what feels right for you.
As we age, it’s easy to default to what the experts say—GPs, specialists, the people we trust to guide us. But here’s the thing – while I have the utmost respect for medical professionals, their advice doesn’t always take into account the full picture of what you feel inside. Their information, while valuable, can sometimes be limited. If doctors prescribed exercise and proper nutrition as quickly as they prescribed medication, the world would be far better.
So, I didn’t listen to the doctor. Instead, I listened to my body, pushed through the fear of further damage and went to Hyrox. I performed better than I could have imagined and, as I write this, I’m actually contemplating entering another event to shave off a few more minutes or, at the very least, to give me a renewed sense of purpose for my training.
The moral of the story? Don’t let setbacks define you. Movement, the right mindset and proper nourishment can move mountains, even when life tells you to slow down or stop. Sometimes, the only person who truly knows what’s best for you… is you.
