Street Justice

31 Oct, 2024

This month Discover catches up with Tony creator of Street Justice, a multi faceted brand based in Brighton.

Tell us about Street Justice? I would If I could. At the moment it’s about 40% club night, 35% street-style-fashion Instagram and 25% music mixes and recommendations. But ask me next week and it’ll probably include a publishing arm and a Croquet team.

Why did you decide to create the brand? I’ve promoted various events and club nights in town since the 00s. And the one thing they’ve all had in common is that I’m essentially soundtracking a fun night out for myself – and only then hoping it’ll connect with other people. So when I wanted a place where I could dance to Ian Dury, The Sugababes and BICEP in the space of 10 minutes – I had to invent it.

What inspires you? Skate video soundtracks, DIY creativity of any nature, the buzz of playing to a room full of dancing, smiling faces.

When is the next event and what can attendees expect? Friday Nov 15th at DUST. I’ll be going back-to-back with my favourite DJ in the city – the immeasurably talented DJ XZAN. There’ll be new-wave hits, mutant disco, hip-hop, indie-rock and weirdo-pop aplenty. Plus our impressive tower of old-school TVs playing a specially curated video collage.

What makes your events stand out? We move so rapidly from one musical genre to something totally different which I think really satisfies people. But it’s not done sloppily – there’s a lot of preparation and forethought gone into every single mix. I understand the desire to go listen to one type of music all night long – but we cater to the opposite. Plus we have £1 pints from 11pm – 12.30am.

Tell us three things you love about Brighton? Number one – the people power. To be amongst the HUGE counter-protest who told the Far Right to bugger off over Summer tells you everything you need to know about most Brightonians. Same with the regular Palestine marches, Trans Pride and many more. Number two – Live music. There’s so, so many great local bands and there’s conceivably two or three gigs you could go to any night of the week. Number Three – The beach. It’s kinda obvious but I’ve lived here 20 years and I still walk down there on a summer evening thinking how lucky I am.

Friday Nov 15th @ DUST – 77 East St, BN1 1NF
