StylePixie / The Power of Colour

3 Dec, 2024

Ever had one of those days when people are really drawn to you? You seem to be receiving an abundance of compliments. You catch yourself in the mirror and feel confident with the way you look. These kinds of days are feel-good days, right? Chances are, you are wearing your best colours, colours that are in harmony with your skin’s undertone and your unique combination of skin, hair and eyes.

Colour can evoke a wide range of emotional responses giving us an intangible feeling, both in our environments and in the clothes we wear. Consider, for example the feeling of blues, cool, calm, stable and reliable or green with its natural, fresh, and peaceful approach, red brings confidence, power, passion or danger and optimistic yellow is both happy, joyous and even cautious.

When it comes to our clothes many of us are guilty of owning garments bought for a mood or a feeling. Maybe we were swayed by seasonal trends that subconsciously dictated our choices only to realise that they don’t really suit us. The colours we are drawn to and the colours we wear around our face may not always be in harmony. This all boils down to the undertone of your skin and the depth and contrast or your colourings. This is why understanding colour can be impactful and transformative, especially when it comes to getting dressed every day.

There are multiple studies and concepts for colour analysis but most work on similar principles of 4 base seasons, Winter/Summer = Cool, and Autumn/Spring = Warm. These elements are attached to your undertone, which without getting too technical, is tied up with genetics, is unchangeable, and has to do with the melanin and hemoglobulin in the skin.

The sub seasons are attached to each of the base seasons, they are-; warm/cool = true to the core season, light/dark = depth, and bright/soft = contrast. The sub seasons are tied to your overtones and these characteristics can be changeable over time, like hair colour etc. Sometimes you may start out as a cool winter and as you journey through life and your hair and eye colour fades, (yep, that can happen) you may become a cool summer.

Finding your most complimentary colours comes from assessing all elements to find the colours that sit most harmoniously with your individual colourings. Get it right and you will glow through your days with a radiating complexion and ideally a ton of compliments.
