PRIDE – StylePixie

29 Jul, 2024

PRIDE festivities are but a moment away and with so many events, there are so many outfits to plan. Whether you are part of the LGBTQ+ community or supporter of, there is a vibrancy that ensues in Brighton that is undeniable for the weekend of PRIDE.

I for one love any excuse to go all out to stand out… and PRIDE is the perfect time to be fabulous and flamboyant. The weekend of the 3rd/4th is a sea of sequins, feathers, glitter and rainbow colours and big brands like Amazon, Shein, Temu and Asos have been rolling out their PRIDE collections. But buyer, beware. Rainbow washing is everywhere. These fleeting celebratory fast fashion garments are totally unsustainable and often made in exploitative conditions.

So is there a way to shine in the light of glittering glamour and still be respectful of our planet and environment? The short answer is yes! Every one of us can make a difference by adopting a mindful and considered approach to our buying habits.

Here are my top tips to help you avoid the pitfalls of these often unethical, global polluters and still feel fabulous and in the spirit of PRIDE.

Sustainable Sequins – A variety of options are now available from recycled plastic through to fully biodegradable. Numerous brands such as Reformation, Stella McCartney, Albaray and Needle and Thread are leading the way and have the most traceable approaches to reduce environmental impacts and uphold ethical standards.

Buy Second Hand – Brighton is full of vintage and preloved stores that are busting at the seams with colourful possibilities.

Upcycle and Re-Wear – There is nothing wrong with an outfit repeat and adding a creative upgrade or embellishment could give you a unique and outstanding ensemble.

Rent – The rental market is not what it used to be. There is all manner of bling available to rent these days. Check out my Discover Brighton May Edition Column to learn more about the rental market.

Buy Mindfully – Buying an outfit that will be treasured, loved and worn for years to come, not just worn once and discarded.

Support Queer Owned Brands – Standing in support of the LGBTQ+ community and sourcing rainbow merch items from small businesses that reflect sustainable and ethical values.

Wishing our LGBTQ+ community a wonderful PRIDE weekend. Celebrate in style, stay safe, stay hydrated and dance your pants off!

Till next time…XOXO StylePixie
