The Gayby Doctors in Brighton

For over 40 years, London Women’s Clinic (LWC) has helped LGBTQ+ people and same-sex couples build the families they wanted, on their terms. It’s an approach built on listening first, and treating people as individuals rather than categories.

Now, LWC is proud to call Brighton home too. A city built on diversity and the freedom to be exactly who you are feels like the right place for us, because that’s the ethos we’ve always had.

Where we started

In the 1980s and 90s, fertility care in the UK looked very different for same-sex couples and the wider LGBTQ+ community. Access to treatment was shaped as much by societal attitudes as clinical need – and for many, the answer from clinics was simply no.

Within that landscape, pioneers at London Women’s Clinic – including Dr Kamal Ahuja, our scientific and managing director, and Mimi Arian-Schad, our director of nursing and person responsible to the HFEA – worked to reshape fertility care. Not by waiting for the culture to change, but by changing it themselves.

The press at the time dubbed Dr Ahuja “the gayby doctor”. London Women’s Clinic wore that label with pride then. We wear it with pride now.

Where we are now

That same pioneering spirit is alive in our Brighton clinic today, now channelled into staying at the forefront of fertility science.

Led by medical director, Professor Nick Macklon, our clinical team works at the front edge of fertility research, including gentler, milder treatment approaches that ask less of your body while asking nothing less of the results. That shows up across our broad range of treatments – reciprocal IVF, fertility preservation for trans and non-binary patients, and plans that don’t force anyone into a box built for someone else. Being called pioneers is nice. Staying pioneers is the actual job.

Every path to parenthood

Families don’t all look the same, and neither do fertility journeys. We support solo parents, same-sex couples, and trans and non-binary people with personalised plans, clear pathways and care that’s always affirming. Our role is simple: help you understand your options, feel confident in your choices, and move forward with support at every step.

From donor programmes to surrogacy, we provide inclusive, affirming care for every path to parenthood. For over 40 years, London Women’s Clinic has supported LGBTQ+ people and modern families with expertise, respect and genuine understanding – from your first conversation to your first scan.
