The Great Escape Festival 2026: 20 years of musical revelation
Two decades in and the Escape is greater than ever. Yet the question remains: who is escaping – and what are we escaping from? A quick Google search might suggest industry power players fleeing their London offices in search of uncut gems by the seaside. I’d say you don’t need a lanyard around your neck to be on the inside.
This is a festival for anyone with a passion for the power of music – a jack-in-the-box of musical discovery, a place to transcend the confines of cookie-cutter culture. This May, get set to light up your weekend (and your imagination) with a revelation of sound.
Since its inception in 2006, the festival has always been a step ahead. Trailblazers like Kneecap, CMAT, Dave, Kae Tempest, Squid and Bob Vylan form an alumni roster that once erupted across the grassroots venues they played. One of the first bands to appear on the Great Escape bill – The Kooks – return this year, marking a full-circle moment in a monumental career. The local legends’ return highlights a festival where every poster marks musical milestones with futuristic foresight.
This flagship of emerging talent is also a salute to the venues that make it possible: The Hope & Ruin, Green Door Store, Komedia, Fabrica, Volks, Concorde 2, Patterns, The Old Market – and smaller venues, churches and pubs in between. With its unique venue-hopping format, it’s just as much about Brighton and Hove itself – a city that opens its doors to champion home-grown talent.
Ultimately, the beauty of The Great Escape lies in a wristband that unlocks the city, letting you follow music through Brighton and Hove as if hitting shuffle on your favourite streaming platform. To quote Joshua Idehen’s lyrics during a packed-out performance in the Komedia basement last year: “This is my church… Our skins blue-lit and we move in sync. In this moment, I feel connected to something deeper.”
In these crowded rooms, a little magic happens – people escape to a better place beneath a canopy of shared sound and scooped stars.
