The Old Market Brighton: Of Land, Sea and Sky

This May, The Old Market unveils a powerful new offering as part of Brighton Festival, unveiling ‘Of Land, Sea and Sky’, a three-week programme of immersive, sensory and thought-provoking events celebrating our deep connection to the natural world.

Running from 2–23 May, this ambitious season transforms the beloved Hove venue into a hub for reflection, creativity and collective experience. Rooted in themes of land, sea and sky, the programme invites audiences to reconnect with the environments that shape both the city and our everyday lives, from the soil beneath our feet to the vast oceans and skies beyond. Alongside the core programme, a host of additional events can be found online, including the newly announced Seeds of Hope talk and a series of deeply restorative Nature Soundbaths.

Things begin with a bang on Sat 2 May, as Brighton DJ Changing Currents headlines a high-energy launch party. Known for his global following and electrifying performances, including a standout set at Glastonbury, he sets the tone for a season that blends music, movement and meaning.

From 6–9 May, audiences can drift into Sounds of the Ocean, an award-winning immersive experience combining 360-degree underwater visuals with live ambient percussion. Featuring breathtaking footage of whales and dolphins, this mindful installation offers both a moment of calm and a call to action, highlighting the fragile state of our seas.

Adventure takes centre stage on 12 May with the return of the Kendal Mountain Tour. Showcasing extraordinary short films and talks from explorers and local voices, the evening celebrates human resilience and our enduring relationship with wild landscapes.

Later in the month, TAKKUUK (19–23 May) delivers a striking audio-visual installation exploring Arctic life, climate change and Indigenous storytelling. Created by electronic duo BICEP alongside leading visual artists, this fully immersive 360-degree experience is as urgent as it is captivating.

Closing the season on 22 May, Saturama offers a poetic journey through Britain’s rare temperate rainforests, blending sound, science and stunning visuals into a truly transportive finale.

We urge you to support this much-loved, Grade II listed, independent venue. The Old Market is a true cultural cornerstone.
