Somatic therapy: a body-centered approach to healing that focuses on the connection between mind and body. It recognises that emotions and experiences are not just mental, but also physically manifested in the body through sensations, tension and posture. By addressing these physical manifestations, somatic therapy aims to help individuals process and release unresolved trauma, reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing.
At the Somatic Therapies Centre in Hove, this mind-body approach comes to life in a serene townhouse setting, featuring high-ceilings, original architraves and a neutral colour palette over its two floors. The first floor is a yoga studio with the upper floor containing therapy and massage rooms.
I was fortunate to be invited for a massage and as someone who carries stress in my neck and shoulders, I jumped at the chance. Enter Nathalie Mineau, a multi-disciplinary therapist with 35 years’ experience in massage (and teaching it to others at MET College). She added humanistic counsellor to her impressive CV during Covid.
Nathalie used hot stones during my treatment, which I’ve never experienced before. The heat allowed my muscles to relax in conjunction with the massage therapist’s expert pressure. Of course, a workwoman is only as good as her tools after all…
I had a grateful realisation after she finished massaging one leg, knowing she’d move on to the other — I didn’t want the experience to end (and never wanted to be an octopus more). The gentle heat from the stones used on my neck and shoulders also worked their magic transporting me to a blissful dimension. Natalie checked in throughout to ensure I was comfortable and, once the hour was up, I emerged sleepy and slightly dishevelled, but undeniably more relaxed.
