Freda J McDonald, better known as talented cabaret star Josephine Baker, arrived in France in 1925 to escape segregation in her own country. She became an iconic artist during the 1920s and 1930s, and this exceptional woman also played an active role in the fight against racism, as well as against nazism as a member of the French Resistance during WW2. For this, she was awarded France’s highest honour, the Legion d’Honneur, and in November 2021 President Macron granted that her coffin be moved to the Pantheon, joining the small group of women who have been given that privilege.
The Brighton and Hove French Circle was founded in 1915, and we continue today, meeting twice a month, for illustrated talks in French, and social events. We welcome people from different backgrounds and affinities who are interested in French language and culture.
