Charleston has just announced an exceptional lineup of speakers for its autumn programme of live evening events. These intimate conversations will all take place in the beautifully restored Hay Barn at Charleston in Firle.
- One of Britain’s most celebrated contemporary artists, David Shrigley, is beloved for his spare, absurd and often brilliantly funny drawings. In ‘Creative Writing’ he discusses the relationship between words and images, the creative process, and why the everyday remains such a rich source of absurdity. (25 September)
- In ‘The Creative Garden’, Gardens Illustrated editor, Stephanie Mahon, and garden designer Annie Guilfoyle explore gardening as a creative practice with Nigel Slater and Sarah Price. They will discuss how growing can feed other forms of creativity and what happens when imaginative people get their hands in the soil. In partnership with Garden Masterclass. (8 October)
- The landscape of Sussex is woven through Kate Mosse’s memories, stories and imagination. Part nature writing, part memoir and part love letter to Sussex, her new book ‘Autumn’, is an atmospheric celebration of a season, a place and the power of paying attention. (23 October)
- Discover the extraordinary life and work of Quentin Bell through the eyes of his family. Writer and historian Virginia Nicholson, artist and textile designer Cressida Bell, and artist and art writer Julian Bell, share their perspectives on their father’s creative practice, his intellectual life and his enduring relationship with Charleston.
- After a career creating clothes that let people tell their fashion stories, Roland Mouret is now ready to tell his own story. Join the French fashion designer and artist as he discusses his autobiography, ‘I Am Roland Mouret’, an intimate account of his life and career. (7 November)
- In a journey into the heart of sculpture, renowned art historian and curator Jo Baring explores creativity, memory and why we have been driven to make art in this medium since the very beginning of humanity, in conversation with Nerissa Taysom. (13 November)
