Brighton’s award-winning zero-waste vegan store reopens.
Brighton’s beloved eco-friendly vegan store Hunglish is back, and it’s bigger and better than ever.
Officially reopening its doors in July, the award-winning zero-waste shop has moved to a stunning new premises in the North Laine after a year-long hiatus, and owner Vicky couldn’t be happier.
“I had to wait a year for this place,” she says, smiling as she looks around the spacious new site. “But it was worth it – the layout, the size and the local community here are all amazing. People introduced themselves the moment I arrived. It already feels like home.”
Fans of the original Hunglish will be pleased to know the shop’s ethos remains intact: everything is vegan, low-waste and ethically sourced, from food and household essentials to refills and bring-your-own packaging. But now, with more space, there’s room to expand. Think freshly made sandwiches, toasties, cakes and pastries, as well as smoothies, iced vegan frappés and specialty coffee sourced from Brighton-based Redroaster. Come autumn, you can expect warming vegan stews and hot meals too.
Art also plays a role in the new space. Local artists have been invited to display their work in the shop, with some pieces raising funds for charity. “It adds a real sense of soul,” Vicky says, “and helps us support even more of the Brighton community.”
That sense of inclusion is key to Hunglish. Plans are underway to register the shop as a certified LGBTQIA+ safe space through the training organisation BUBU. “I want this to be a safe space for everyone,” she says. “Not just for Pride month – always. It’s not about marketing for one month, It’s about making sure everyone feels welcome, protected and seen.”
Hunglish also remains dementia-friendly, with quiet spaces and gentle music for older or neurodivergent customers. This isn’t just a shop, it’s a community hub with heart and we are pleased to see it return.
