Afternoon tea at the Metropole Bar & Terrace

30 Jul, 2025

There’s something undeniably comforting and quintessentially British about the ritual of an afternoon tea. Add a seafront setting with stunning sea views and a touch of five-star glamour, and you’ve got yourself a memorable experience. That’s exactly what we discovered at Metropole Bar, situated at DoubleTree by Hilton Brighton Metropole.

Stepping through the hotel’s revolving doors feels like entering a different world. The reception is a study in decadence, gleaming crystal chandeliers, marble floors and towering fresh flower displays set the tone for what’s to come.

Just beyond, the Metropole Bar welcomes guests with an elegant, airy space, where floor-to-ceiling windows frame the expansive Brighton seafront. Seated in a plush window booth, we were promptly served piping hot pots of Hope & Glory tea. A glass of fizz was offered as an indulgent upgrade, how could we resist?

The afternoon tea arrived as a beautifully presented three-tiered stand, beginning with an imaginative savoury selection. Highlights included the Truffle Egg Mayonnaise on mini brioche (delicately creamy with just the right earthy note) and a delightfully rich Croque Monsieur. The Caponata Rosti Cup offered a welcome vegetarian twist, while the Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese on cocoa bread added a unique and visually striking touch. Next, a parade of mini cakes and pastries tempted even the most restrained sweet tooth. The Passion Fruit Tart was a zingy standout, while the Red Velvet Cake was classic comfort. A gooey Chocolate Lava Cake and a generously filled Chocolate Cream Horn rounded off the top tier with flair.

And, of course, no afternoon tea is complete without scones, served warm, with generous pots of clotted cream and strawberry jam. Whether you go plain or fruit, the scones are a fluffy triumph.

The Metropole Bar & Terrace delivers a stylish and satisfying afternoon tea with friendly service that lives up to the setting. It’s a delicious way to spend an indulgent afternoon, especially with that sea view sparkling in the background. We highly recommend visiting for special anniversaries, birthdays or just because. You don’t need to be a hotel guest to indulge yourself.
