A truly independent record shop in the North Laine

In record shop land, every day is like Christmas if you love spending time browsing the racks, absorbing the vibes, and chatting to the folks behind the counter about what you’ve been listening to, who you’ve been to see live lately and what recommendations they have for you. However, if you’ve been sent in on a present-buying mission, it can be a little daunting.

The unfamiliar sounds, the genre separation, the not-really-knowing-what-you’re-looking-or-asking-for feeling. But at Resident, the multi-award-winning independent record and book shop in the North Laine, there’s honestly nothing to fear as its spacious layout, super-friendly team and easy-to-navigate product range makes for a welcoming and relaxed shopping experience.

Plus, the helpful staff are always on hand to help you locate something specific or offer suggestions. Perfect for tackling your partner/child/sibling/friend/parent’s musical and literary wishlist.

Handily, as each year rolls towards its close, Resident staff compile a list of their favourite releases of the year. Albums, compilations, reissues, books, events, gigs – everything that has shaped their year, distilled down into an informative A5 ‘best of’ guide known as ‘The Resident Annual’. It’s a useful reminder of the things that you maybe meant to check out, your own favourites of the year and those that you need to go back to again. But the publication is an especially good resource as a gift guide that will help you come up with excellent ideas for your friends and family (or to use yourself as a way of hinting to your loved ones what they should get for you by casually leaving your well-thumbed copy around with your most-wanted items clearly circled!). The Resident Annual provides short write-ups of the shop’s bestsellers and top picks across a wide variety of genres. It also contains a dedicated Staff Picks section, which means you can identify who you/your gift recipient might have the most in common with and can potentially provide some appropriate inspiration.

The Resident Annual comes as a beautiful printed publication that’s completely free to pick up in store (and can also be ordered online if you don’t live locally or can’t get into town). It’s also available to view digitally on the Resident website – it just doesn’t feel or smell quite as nice!

Resident Opening Hours: Mon–Sat: 9:30–18:00 & Sun: 10–17:30 (Check the website for variations over the festive season)

Order online 24/7 at: www.resident-music.com for delivery or collection in store
