Sound Affects: The art of being inspired
Sound affects us – just look around. To the attuned Brightonian, music is everywhere: 1970s icons soundtracking North Laine’s vintage shops, mod crews gathering down by the Volks Railway, punks with dogtooth collars and black-and-blue spiked hair, headphones plugged in and favourite records on full blast. Brighton is dripping with music culture, from the sounds we listen to and the scenes that shape how we dress, move and think.

Sound Affects is a monthly night that explores this great interplay. Hosted by Jak Hutchcraft – the journalist and filmmaker behind Fatboy Slim documentary Right Here, Right Now – the event thrives on his instinct for finding stories worth telling. Each night brings together authors, artists, photographers and die-hard music fans for live discussions exploring cultural shifts, underground subcultures and creative influences that stretch from psych rock to pop.
Some influences feature familiar names; others lead you down paths you might never have thought to wander – from a personal take on the history of Britpop to the imprints of jazz on a local artist’s designs. Creative inspiration takes on a different shape in every pair of hands.

Past guests have included everyone from music biographers and mosh-pit photographers to a winner of The Voice and a trio of death-metal obsessives.
There is power in recognising brilliance in another person’s story – it sparks an impulse to bring a little of that into our own lives. For a weekday evening, Sound Affects makes room for connection, conversation and the underrated pleasure of sharing a table with other curious minds. Held in the welcoming nooks of local cornerstones like the East Street Tap, the night has a pull-up-a-stool kind of charm.

Creativity doesn’t exist in isolation. Whether you are an artist, a music fanatic, or simply looking to join Brighton’s creative community, Sound Affects offers an invitation to tune in.
The upcoming edition of Sound Affects on Wed 4 Nov brings together Brighton DJ legends Wildblood & Queenie, alongside music authors Richard Evans and Michael Cragg. What awaits is another evening of unexpected stories, artistic instinct and creative fire.
