Michael John Lewis Mid-life switch
This month we caught up with Michael John Lewis, a life coach who champions mental health and helps people facilitate positive change in their lives.
Tell us about yourself…
My name is Michael John Lewis (MJL), Brighton’s ‘Mid Life Switch’ coach, videographer and social media guy. I moved from Hackney, London, to Brighton in 2025 following a health scare (thankfully all clear) reshaping my life forever. After what I call my ‘dark year’ – a period of deep mental and spiritual self-discovery – I found a new sense of purpose.
At 40, I share the experiences, tools and life lessons that shape the person I am today, inspiring others to embrace transformations, proving change can happen at any age.
How would you describe your role as life-switch coach?
At the heart of what I do is coaching, deeper than that I’m a friend, a listener and a catalyst for change. I help people question, reflect and shift their perspective in their daily lives. Everything I do orbits around one core message: calmness. Less stress and fear creates space for clearer thinking, better decisions, stronger relationships and healthier environments. The world has always been at it’s best or worst, it’s about how we choose to view it and the energy we invite in.
How important is it to have open conversations around men’s health?
It’s one of the most important things that has changed mine and others around me for the better. Opening up, sharing, talking, loving, just creating the conversations that could improve or even save a life! Changing vocabulary can benefit your life forever – fewer negative words, holding silences with confidence and realising how important communication is for growth. Even changing a simple text to a voice or video message connects you like no other.
Tell us three things you love about Brighton…
Of course the sea is my first love, her and I have a good thing going. It’s a kind, deep and meaningful community. Brighton gives people permission to truly be themselves. The perfect place for a mid-life switch. My social media community is a perfect reflection of this: @mjlmidlifeswitch
