Sound Affects #40: Bev Lee Harling, Jak Hutchcraft, Laura Alice Haworth

Sound Affects is a night of talks about music and subcultures, ideas around how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It’s organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft.

Guest speakers:
Bev Lee Harling – A multi-genre vocalist, violinist and composer working across performance, theatre, dance, film and opera bringing classical, folk, jazz and found sounds to her projects and collaborations. Her new album Ploughing The Salt Sea’ features evocative field recordings from Rock-a-Nore beach and voices gathered through interviews in Hastings Old Town. It was released not on CDs nor vinyl, but on musical postcards.

Laura Alice Haworth – The brains and brawn behind record label, collective and promotions company KNM. The Brighton-based feminist collective champion femme punk, babecore, and queer fury. See what it’s all about at knmpresents.com

Jak Hutchcraft – Journalist, documentary maker and the intrepid host of Sound Affects. His debut feature documentary Right Here, Right Now covers the crazy story of DJ Fatboy Slim’s notorious Big Beach Boutique 2 event on Brighton beach in 2002. The film is available on Sky, Now TV, YouTube and Amazon now. This month at Sound Affects Jak has a brand new talk: The Lonely Hearts Club. It’s a project he’s been working on for five years and he can’t wait to tell the world about it.
