Lizzie Curious: Cooler Than You

This month we chat to DJ and producer Lizzie Curious.

Tell us how you got into DJing?

I’ve been DJing for over 20 years now – I started on vinyl and am completely self-taught (there was no Google or YouTube when I started!) And I still love it as much now 🙂

What’s your favourite track of all time?

That’s a tough one! I might be cheating a little bit but here goes! Candi Staton – You Got The Love, an incredible vocal that never fails to give me spine tingles! And, my favourite track that I’ve produced is my new collab with the amazing vocalist Rowetta, called Energy! It’s a dancefloor banger that I love to drop during my DJ sets – and Rowetta’s vocals on this are mesmerising!

Can you give advice to anyone wanting to learn how to DJ?

Go for it! Get yourself some equipment and just start practicing, you’ll soon get into the flow of it and you’ll love it!

Where can we hear you play in July/August?

I’m so excited for my summer gigs, here’s where you can come and get some curious energy; 6th, Pride at Coast in Worthing, 4th August Pride at Brighton i360, 17th August Coast, Worthing, 24th August Oscars Hastings, 31st August, Wick Street Festival near Berwick and 1st September Beats on the Beach at Coast Worthing! I’m also playing a gig in Houston Texas in July! You can also catch me live streaming DJ sets on Twitch every Tuesday and FriYAY!

Tell us the top three things you love about Brighton.

Truly my favourite city: vibrant, inclusive, fun, awesome venues and right on the beach too! Firstly, the amazing variety of delicious vegan places to eat. I’ve been a vegan for over a decade and Brighton’s always been amazing with the options for us happy herbivores. BBC Introducing Sussex & Surrey – hosted by Melita Dennet, this amazing radio show gives us local artists a chance to shine and showcase our new material – and thanks to Melita one of my tracks this year went on to receive BBC R1 airplay! Fatboy Slim! I mean, what a truly awesome human right!? I absolutely loved opening for him at the Brighton Centre last year.

Who is your inspiration in life and why?

My Mum! She’s amazing – so kind and always positive, and she has always been my biggest cheerleader. She’s also incredibly musically talented, and encouraged me to follow my music passions right from when I was four years old! I remember coming home during my university holidays and mixing vinyl in my bedroom, and my Mum calling up the stairs asking me to turn it up so she could hear it properly. What a legend!
