Thomas Dolby

Wednesday 21st Aug

Thomas Morgan Robertson is an English musician, producer, entrepreneur and teacher who came to prominence in the 1980s with the hits She Blinded Me with Science and Hyperactive! His stage name is a nickname that he was given because he was always messing around with keyboards and tapes and references the audio noise-reduction process pioneered by Dolby Laboratories. Later in his career a lengthy legal battle found that the company had no right to restrict him from using the name. He has collaborated with various musicians including Lene Lovich and George Clinton, received four Grammy nominations and performed the songs in the 1986 film Howard the Duck. In the 1990s he founded a software company, Beatnik, whose technology was used for ringtones on Nokia mobile phones and, since 2014, leads the New Media programme at the Peabody Institute. Support comes from Martin McAloon performing the songs of Prefab Sprout.
