Christmas gifting with Jules Emporium

With the Christmas shopping season on the horizon, we spoke with Jules of Jules Emporium about the charms of independent shopping and why thoughtful presents are making a comeback. At a time when online shopping offers convenience at every turn, we explore the enduring appeal of browsing in person, supporting independent retailers and finding gifts with a more personal touch.

In an age of fast delivery and endless online options, has the art of gift-giving changed? Absolutely. We’ve become remarkably efficient at buying quickly, but many people are now craving something far more personal. A thoughtful gift shows you’ve taken the time to see who they are and what they truly care about. We love seeing those genuine connections customers make with our pieces and hearing the stories behind why they chose them.

What are shoppers actually looking for when they walk through your doors? A wide range of things! From stylish homeware and handcrafted cards to distinctive jewellery and original art. Customers often tell us they’re looking for something unique, something that won’t be found in every household across the country. They appreciate the skill and creativity that goes into a beautifully made item.

Why do independent shops come into their own when Christmas rolls around? Independent spaces offer the thrill of discovery. When people step through our doors, they’re regularly surprised by things they never expected to find. There’s a sense of treasure hunting that’s hard to replicate online. The beauty of it is that this spark of curiosity isn’t just for Christmas; it’s a year-round phenomenon.

The shop has a wonderfully deceptive layout, with three rooms to explore. How do people react when they walk through? I love watching people’s faces! They step in from New Road expecting a cosy boutique, but as they wander deeper, they find our clothes room and then a spacious, high-ceilinged rear gallery with historic parquet floors. It feels like finding a secret sanctuary right in the middle of the city.

From small keepsakes to gallery art, how important is inclusivity to your space? It’s central to everything we do. Art and craftsmanship shouldn’t feel exclusive or intimidating. Whether you’re looking for a small handmade gift or investing in an original painting for your wall, you deserve to feel inspired. We pride ourselves on being a treasure trove where everyone can walk out with something special.

Finally, what is the philosophy behind the Christmas collection at Jules Emporium? The most memorable gifts aren’t necessarily the biggest or most expensive. Every item here is chosen with the belief that a gift should feel like it was discovered, not simply ordered. We want people to leave with something that feels personal and worthy of the person receiving it.

Open every day in Nov and Dec 11:00–17:00. Late-night shopping until 20:00 on Thursdays in December.
