Looking after yourself through fertility treatment
By Anya Sizer, patient advocacy lead, London Women’s Clinic
Fertility treatment can place considerable demands on a person’s emotional and physical wellbeing. Alongside appointments, scans and medication, there is the emotional work of hoping, waiting and living with uncertainty. As patient advocacy lead at London Women’s Clinic, I see how much this process asks of people. Looking after yourself during treatment is not an indulgence; it is an important part of the process.
Be your own best friend: One of the most helpful places to start is by treating yourself with the same kindness, understanding and compassion you would offer your best friend. Fertility treatment can be difficult, and it is important to recognise your own needs rather than placing additional pressure on yourself.
Be kind to yourself and your partner: It is equally important to extend that understanding to your partner. You may both respond to the experience differently, and there is no single right way to navigate it. Making an effort to understand each other’s feelings and working together, rather than against each other, can help you manage the challenges along the way.
Be proactive about socialising: Although treatment can understandably become a major focus, try not to put your life entirely on hold. Continue to do the things that bring you enjoyment and help you feel fulfilled. Making time for friends and planning activities to look forward to can provide a welcome balance to the demands of treatment.
Gather the biggest possible support group: Talk to family, friends or even colleagues and tell them what you need from them. Find a support group online or in person where you can talk to other people going through the same thing.
