Marc Almond is probably best known as the singer of Soft Cell, which he formed in 1978 after meeting keyboard player Dave Ball at Leeds Polytechnic the previous year. After releasing a single funded by Ball’s mother, the duo caught the attention of the Some Bizarre label and signed to them soon after. After their debut single for the label failed to dent the charts they were given one more chance to produce a hit. Tainted Love became one of the biggest selling singles of the 80s and made them a worldwide success. In 1982 Almond formed an offshoot project, Marc and the Mambas, and recorded two albums with this experimental collective. Soft Cell disbanded in 1884 and he released his first solo record, Vermin in Ermine, the same year. His latest album, I’m Not Anyone, a collection of covers continues his gift for introducing old songs to new audiences.
