This Sheffield artist is renowned for a mix of classic songwriting, smooth vocals and northern gritty realism that he has brought to a catalogue that spans over twenty years. Starting his career as guitarist with indie band The Longpigs in the 1990s, he went on to join Pulp. At the insistence of band mates Jarvis Cocker and Steve Mackey he recorded some songs he had written over the years, which resulted in his debut mini LP, released in 2001. After signing to Mute Records he released his third album, Coles Corner in 2006, which earned his first nomination for the Mercury Music Prize. The albums and critical acclaim came thick and fast during the following years and in 2023 he received two Olivier Awards for his musical, Standing at the Sky’s Edge. His Best Of, Now Then, became his 4th Top 10 album and he released his latest last month.
