Feature review: Embracing grey at Simon Webster Hair

As a wise woman – namely actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge – once said, “Hair is everything.” And with ‘ageing gracefully’ a motto fed to us through the media (yawn), it’s no wonder those words loop in our minds. From experiences like my mum’s, embracing grey hair is like jumping into a cold sea – scary at first, but invigorating once you’re on the other side.

After four months of growing out her greys and being stuck in that awkward halfway stage, Mum needed a boost. She didn’t want to dye her hair, or get a high-maintenance re-style. She simply wanted to continue the greying process, improve the condition, and gain a bit of je ne sais quoi. With a wealth of five-star reviews to its name, Simon Webster Hair was the place for the job.

Enter Flo – the stylist who took care of my mum’s hair. She’s been cutting hair since the age of 14, and it shows. Before even reaching for the scissors, Flo took the time to understand not only what Mum wanted, but who she was: her lifestyle, her routine and, crucially, how much time she has to do her hair after rolling out of bed.

The process: Flo used a semi-permanent gloss to even out the roots and lift the fade from decades of box dye. Then came a top-drop treatment to restore softness and shine. She cut the hair into a textured bob – the perfect shape to enhance Mum’s natural waves and support her get-up-and-go lifestyle. A blow-dry followed, then soft straightening for elegant beach waves. The finishing touches? Sam McKnight and Evo products for effortless, polished texture.

The Verdict: In Mum’s words, Flo was “super attentive” and it was the small things that made the experience special: listening properly, being warm and relatable – all while giving her a stellar haircut that left her beaming in every shop-window reflection on the way home.

As Flo suggested, it’s more than just cutting hair. Embracing signs of age can be nerve-racking and liberating – but in the right hands, it becomes something to celebrate. And at Simon Webster Hair, celebrating who you are is all part of the service.
